Robinson and his brother Bruce own Niihau, a 70-square-mile (180-kilometer) Hawaiian island chain island that has been in their familys private possession since their great-great-grandmother Elizabeth McHutchinson Sinclair (1800-1992) purchased it for US$10,000 in gold from King Kamehameha V. Niihau became known as the Forbidden Island during a polio epidemic in the Hawaiian Islands in 1952 because you had to visit with a doctors note in order to avoid the spread of the disease. In fact, every person on Niihau has been to the mainland. Although booking a boat tour is the most affordable option, it wont get you to the island itself. For the past year, former Department of Land and Natural Resources Chairman Mike Wilson -- who also held the title of state historic preservation officer -- insisted that federal law requires a complete archaeological study of the island before he could approve the tests.
